FORT WAYNE – A man is accused of shooting a Fort Wayne police officer with a paintball gun.

Derek M. Aby, 20, of Decatur, was charged Friday with felony battery.

Officer Keith Adair pulled over a vehicle about 4:45 p.m. Sunday near Coliseum Boulevard and Coldwater Road, according to court records.

As he was talking to the driver, Adair heard a popping noise and felt a sudden pain on his right wrist and hand, court records said.

Adair looked down, saw reddish paint and realized he’d been hit with a paintball. The shot left a cut, swelling and redness.

The paint ended up on his skin and uniform.

A witness told police the shooter was in a silver Taurus and was able to provide a license-plate number.

Shortly afterward, an officer stopped a car matching that description.

Aby was the driver and the only person in the car, court records said.

Police found a paintball gun and carbon dioxide canisters in the car, court records said.

There was red paint on Aby and the car, according to court records.

Aby admitted shooting Adair because he “pulled that guy over for no reason.” He also told police he did not know Adair was an officer when he shot him and that the round was just paint and would wash out, court records said.

Aby, who has a warrant for his arrest, was not in custody Friday.

RAP4 is proud to support the US Military through proper training of active duty and reserve forces, as well as Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets as they prepare for careers of service and honor. RAP4 recently was invited back to Camp Parks in California to facilitate a field training day for medics…and we brought cases of paint and dozens of Gen7 T68 markers so the ROTC cadets could experience training that is truly as real as it gets.

Medics are tasked with one of the most challenging, and dynamic, jobs in a combat unit. Armed for combat and equipped with medical gear to stabilize the wounded for transfer out of the combat zone, they must transition from fighting to saving lives…while still taking fire, and working against time. To help them train for evading and returning fire, caring for the wounded and transporting them out of live fire zones, RAP4 staged multiple real-world-inspired scenarios that found the cadets squaring off against “insurgents” on Camp Parks’ training grounds.

With the function, balance, and design of the T68 Gen7 markers they carried, cadets were equipped with exact replicas of the M4 carbines they use in other areas of their training. The T68 Gen7 even reloads just like the M4, with detachable spring-fed magazines instead of bulky, unrealistic hoppers. They learned the value of tactical reloading behind cover, coordinating cover fire while transporting “wounded” cadets…and did it all under the most realistic conditions that a combat simulation can create.

Realistic gear… Realistic training… It all adds up to real-world results! RAP4 is grateful to Camp Parks for these continuing opportunities to train tomorrow’s warriors, today.

Real Action Paintball – As Real as it Gets!

What makes a rechargeable battery recharge you ask?

Rechargeable alkaline batteries are composed of the same materials as a normal alkaline battery, and a rechargeable battery will be discharged like an ordinary battery. When a circuit is created to produce power in a battery oxidation occurs in one of the batteries components which causes electrons to be lost. The one thing that separates rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries is that a rechargeable battery has the ability to regain the lost electrons. When rechargeable batteries are placed in their recharging device the flow of the electrons becomes reversed and the component regains electrons restoring it to its original state.

The process that restores batteries to their original states can be dangerous if done incorrectly. Placing batteries in the wrong charger along with leaving batteries in a charger for too long can over restore the electrons creating problems. When a battery is placed in the wrong charger there can be too much power going to the battery causing the battery to over charge immensely which will result in the battery exploding or leaking. This same process can occur when a battery is left in a charger for too long. The component being restored of its electrons will attempt to gain additional electrons which will cause the battery components to expand resulting in the battery exploding or leaking. When recharging batteries be sure to read the manufacturers warnings about recharging your batteries.

Have you ever wondered how a battery works or what’s inside a battery?

For every battery to work there has to be two electrodes which are the cathode and anode plus an electrolyte. The electrons in the battery will flow between the electrodes and through the electrolyte. A closed circuit is created by the flow of the electrons, and this uses up the energy in the electrolyte to produce electrical power for your device.

This process is the same for every type of battery and the only thing that changes are the battery components. In an alkaline battery the the anode which is the positive electrode is composed of a zinc powder which allows for a high reaction rate and electron flow. The cathode which is the negative electrode in a battery is composed of manganese dioxide in a powder form along with graphite to increase conductivity. The component in the batteries electrolyte is potassium hydroxide which can cause problems if it starts to leak. The final internal component of an alkaline battery is a separator used to keep the electrolyte away from the electrodes. All of these components put together give an alkaline battery its higher density and longer shelf life.

All alkaline batteries have the same internal components, but their internal setups differ depending on the size of the battery. AA alkaline batteries contain one electrochemical cell, and voltage can change depending on the chemical setup of the battery. A 9V alkaline battery consists of 6 cylindrical electrochemical cells. To achieve 9 volts of power, the cells are connected in a series by either welding tabs from one cell to another or running foil strips from one cell to the other. A low quality battery can greatly affect your devices performance so be don’t be cheap and make sure to buy high quality batteries.

There is a lot more to think about with batteries than most people think. Using batteries along with the tips in this article will decrease potential battery related threats that could harm the devices you put batteries into.

Most safety tips related to batteries are ignored by everyone since these tips can be found in the instruction manual of your device that most choose not to read. You’ll find that a decent amount of manuals recommend not to mix battery brands, types, mAh capacities, or age. When using batteries in a device that requires more than one battery be sure to take all the batteries needed out of the same package. This will insure that your device can be safely powered. If you using two different batteries you never know what could be different about them, and this could cause a leak.

In a mock situation lets say one battery has a higher mAh capacity then the other, the battery with the lower mAh capacity dies while the other battery continues to power the device. The dead battery will try to reverse charge which is a electrochemical reaction where the components of the battery react with each other in attempt to restore the battery components to their original state to produce power once again.

While the one battery continues to run the battery attempting a reverse charge will end up leaking corrosive materials that could damage your device. One huge factor that affects a battery leak is age. Batteries are full of corrosive material and over time the corrosive material in a battery will eat at the inside lining of a battery; weakening it and increasing your chances of having a leak. Temperature is another factor that can affect your batteries.

No matter if you leave your battery in a car on a hot day or in a garage during a cold winter, this can cause problems for your batteries. Different temperatures can affect your batteries in different ways. Leaving your battery in a hot temperature can create expansion of battery components, while leaving your battery in a cold garage can create contraction of components. In either situation battery components can become sacrificed, and materials can loosen causing failure of your batteries.

Signs of a battery failure are very noticeable, things such as changes in the color on a wrapper along with rust on the battery can notify you that the battery is not safe and you need to change your batteries. Dents in a battery are also very telltale signs of a battery fail. When you drop a battery even if you can not see signs of damage an internal short can occur which will which discharge the battery. The seal of the battery can also be sacrificed after being dropped which can result in a leak.

However there are a few things you can do to save your device from a battery leak. One step you can take to prevent damage from a battery leak is wrap your batteries in paper before you put them into your device. If the batteries will not fit when they are wrapped then don’t use this tip, but wrapping the batteries will help contain the corrosive material if a battery does leak. The one thing you can do if a battery does leak is clean all contact points for the battery with sandpaper hopefully this will clean off the corrosive material and allow your device to be powered again.

Be smart and be safe!
